Photography on Main Street
2011 October Field Trip – organized by Andrea Seraphim.
October 22nd was a rather standard fall Saturday in Vancouver – a bit grey and drizzly. It was also the afternoon that our club was holding a street photography field trip, starting at 27th and Main Street. Several of us showed up around noon at the meeting place – Splitz Café and partook of the great burgers and chips. Around 1:00 Andrea arrived, complete with laptop, magazines and books. She gave us a great talk, illustrated by her images on the laptop and we all had a chance to look at her article and photographs in Canada Camera magazine, as well as several books of photographs taken by famous street photographers.
Duly inspired, we all, in groups or singly, hit the street. Some went north, some went south and we all passed and photographed each other at various spots. More and more people from our club kept arriving on the street (we had 18 in all) and the local shoppers were noticing our presence. We were often asked what we were doing and who were but once people knew we were a local camera club, most were very helpful and were often enthusiastic models.
Some of us took images of reflections in windows, some took people on the street and some of us discovered the back lanes with the very interesting graffiti and discarded boxes, palettes and other detritus.
About 3:00, we went back to the Splitz café and checked in with Andrea, looked at each others images and had a discussion of our experiences. Some of us got some interesting images, some not so much, but we all had a great time meeting new members of our club and photographing a challenging exciting venue. Oh yes, the rain held off for us too, hooray!
Our many thanks to Andrea for arranging this field trip – we look forward to more street photography in the future.
